My DVD/Blu-Ray Sleeve Evaluation

For my graphics project, I had the task to create a Blu-Ray sleeve. I use my own method of splitting the sleeve into three parts. The first was the front cover. I used my poster, but I changed the design.

  1.  Changed the size to 1x19cm.
  2. Added the Blu-Ray logo.
  3. Removed the blurb.
  4. Made the protagonist larger.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the second part of the task. I created the side cover. I took these steps to help me through the process of designing the cover.
  1. Created the size 19x1cm onto photoshop.
  2. I added the title from my poster onto photoshop.
  3. I rotated the title and scaled the image.
  4. I added the blu-ray image and then scaled it down to size.
  5. I downloaded the production company logo off the internet.
  6. I uploaded it into photoshop and scaled the image size.
  7. I then uploaded the 18 certificate onto photoshop and scaled it to size.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the third part of my task. I created the back cover. I took these steps to help me through the process of designing the cover.
  1. Created the size 19x1 onto photoshop.
  2. I uploaded my film synopsis onto photoshop.
  3. I downloaded the blu-ray logo off the internet.
  4. I uploaded the logo onto photoshop and scaled the image.
  5. I then uploaded the BBFC certificates I had downloaded.
  6. I then moved a layer and added the background (Blood splatter) image, which I downloaded off the internet.
  7. I uploaded the poster blurb onto photoshop and scaled the image down to a fitting size.
  8. I downloaded the barcode off the internet using the screenshot tool and then uploaded it onto photoshop.
  9. I scaled the barcode using the transform tool.
  10. I created two critic reviews using the text box tool.
  11. I uploaded the image (top-right picture) onto photoshop and scaled it onto the first layer using the transform tool.

Poster Analysis

Only God Forgives: This is a landscape poster for the 2013 film 'Only God Forgives'. The poster, in nature is filled with different colours and patterns. I believe the colours resemble the loud and vibrant nightlife of a city. And the pattens resemble a foreign world filled with life, but also danger. The title is shown in a red neon light. The coluer red suggests danger, and the neon font suggests that the character is gambling; possibly with his own life. The lead character (Jullian) holds up his fists as if he is preparing himself for a fight. The character is dressed in a suit, his tie is down and his sleeves and rolled up, this means that the character doesn't use a weapon, he prefers to get his hands dirty. Although the character's body is prepared for fighting, his expression is stale. He has a look of fear and guilt in his eyes, like he has done something wrong and he fears he must face the consequences. His actions now look more defencive rather than perpetrating. The right-hand bottom corner of the poster is black, the blackness expands and spreads into the centre of the poster. This could suggest that death is getting closer towards the character. The poster features the names of the main two actors starring in the film, they are featured because of their fame and their acting ability. The films director is also named in the poster. Although the director is not hugely famous, he has gained a cult following within the film industry after making his last film 'Drive'. The poster features a five star rating and review from the British newspaper 'The Guardian'. This is a poster for British audiences so people can relate with the guardians opinion. The poster also includes the tag line 'Time To Face Your Demons" this gives the audience a brief insight of what the film is about and why the character is frozen in his actions. The element of danger shows a similar theme to my film poster.

Drive: This is an alternative landscape poster for the 2011 film 'Drive'. The posters background shows us a deserted street a downtown urban area. Most of the light is located further towards the background. And the darkness surrounds the protagonist. This could suggest that the character has a dark nature and that he is blocking someone or something away from the light. This could also mean that the character is trying to escape the harsh life of the city and wants to live a normal simple life. The protagonist simply named 'The Driver' stares blankly towards the distance, As if he is searching for something, or he his reaching for a target, he could be looking towards a object or a person. The protagonist wears driving gear such as, driving gloves, a duffel bag and a leather jacket. He is prepared for the objective his is about to face ahead of him. 'The Driver' reaches inside his left pocket, possibly hiding a weapon such as a pistol gun or small knife. The characters expression looks almost emotionless, like he has no remorse for his actions. This would suggest that the protagonist is more of an anti-hero than the usual good guy image. The car is the closest object towards the character, this could suggest that his life revolves around driving. The title is in BOLD WHITE CAPITAL LETTERS, this gives off an action feeling. The poster features the stars name above the title (Ryan Gosling) this can attract a larger audience who also enjoy other Ryan Gosling movies. There is a positive quote from the British newspaper 'The Times', this can also be used to expand the audience. The poster shows that the film is the winner of the 2011 Cannes film festival, this can grab the attention of another target audience such as movie buffs and other people who are into the film industry. This poster also introduces the films tag line 'Get in. Get out. Get away.' These short sentences give off the same action feeling as the bold title. My poster follows a similar image because my protagonist also looks fiercely towards the camera, my poster also follows the dark nature of this poster.

The Silence Of The Lambs: This is the original vertical poster for the 1991 film 'The Silence Of The Lambs'. The posters background has a mix of light and dark. The darkness seems to grow around the face in a clockwise direction, slowly attaching itself closer and closer towards the character. If you look at the contrast from white to black, you will see an airbrush-like effect, this creates a supernatural feel to the poster. The protagonist eyebrows are raised and her eyes are frozen wide open, the expression on face shows fear and distress. Something is not quite right.., I feel that the film makers wanted this because the film in itself has a creepy theme.  The protagonists eyes are almost black, like the eyes on a child's doll, this could suggest that; like a doll she is being controlled by something or someone. The centerpiece of this poster is the moth which sits on the mouth of the character; Silencing her. (a reference of the title). The moth itself is explained in the movie. If you take a closer look at the moth, you can see the skull is made from an illustration of a man and two women. This is a hidden message which viewers discover in the film. (a reference to Buffalo Bill's transformation). This poster features names of actors, Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins and Scott Glenn. These actors were not major stars at the time of the films release, but they were known for there acting ability's, Jodie Foster had won an Oscar for her previous film 'The Accused'. And Hopkins winning a BAFTA for 'The Elephant Man'. The title is red, this could resemble danger or even bloodshed. The poster quotes 'From The Terrifying Best Seller' Referencing the Thomas Harris novel of the same name. This can expand a target audience; in this case, the readers. My poster shares a similar feel and tone to this one. Such as the darkness surrounding the face and the hidden messages that reference the story.

A Clockwork Orange: This is the original poster for the 1971 Stanley Kubrick film 'A Clockwork Orange'. The background of the poster is light and the centre of the poster is dark, this draws viewers attention the the middle of the poster, because it stands out more. The dark image gives off a horror effect. The posters for ground features a triangle which makes the tip of the letter A. All sides of this triangle feature an orange outline, except the horizontal bottom edges where it has been severed from the full letter A, this is to create the title 'A Clockwork Orange.' The film is know for it's strange imagery, which the poster manages to follow. The eye on the protagonists shirt is a common religious symbol, known as The Eye of God, All seeing Eye or Eye of providence. It is used as ancient Egyptian symbolism and as a symbol of Catholicism. The titles font is made in a bubbly 3D-style text. This explains to the audience the bizarre content of the film. Although the picture gives a brief concept of what the film could be about, there is text to also give an insight into the film. The phrase says 'Being the adventures of a young man whose principal interests are rape, ultra-violence and Beethoven.' This shows how the film is dark and helps the audience understand what the film is about. I think the use of text to show a description of the film can give off a powerful effect. The poster also features Stanley Kubrick's name, this is because; at the time of the release date, Kubrick had already made box office hits such as, '2001: A Space Odyssey' and 'Spartacus'. Kubrick's name is still important today, because within the film industry he as been hailed as 'One of the greatest film directors ever'. The reason why I chose the poster is because I was inspired by the dark and bizarre content that is presented. The background of my poster shares the same style of this poster and my character shares the same cold stare as Alex Delarge. (Pictured in poster above).

All four posters have inspired me in different ways and all four posters share a similar theme to mine, I feel that these film posters give the best effect of standing out from the others and have a certain target audience. That is why I chose them.

Film Poster: Expendables

Our latest task in this unit, is learning how to create a film poster. We used a green screen and photoshop to achieve this task. I will now explain the methods of this by using several steps.

Step 1: Our first task was to take our pictures with the green screen. We were given toy guns and told to point them at the lens. We mimicked the positions that are shown by actors on hollywood block-buster films.

Step 2: Our second task was to upload our photo's onto photoshop. We have downloaded the images off our "Learning Box" graphics folder.
Step 3: Our third task was to cut the background out of the image. We did this by using the colour range tool. One we erased all the black out of the image. The image now had a moving pencil shape around the person. We unlocked the background before pressing the backspace button.

Step 4: Our fourth task was create a background. The theme of the expendebles is war, So naturally a exploration in the background would be fitting.

Step 5: Once all of the images were removed from the green screen. Our fifth task was to add ourselves onto the background layer, this was done by dragging our images onto the background tap, and then scaling our ourselves down into a smaller size.

Step 6: Once this task was completed, we discovered that the images did not "blend in" with the background, to resolve this we used the shadow tool, this helped darken the colour of the selected space.

Step 7: Our seventh task was to add the cinematic title and text. This was downloaded off the Skydive website. And added to the poster layer on photoshop.  And downloaded the BBFC certificate on the internet, onto the poster layer on photoshop.

DVD and Blu-Ray Sleeves

This a DVD and Blu-Ray sleeve for the 2007 film 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street'.
The Front cover: The sleeves front cover is the poster of the film. Usually a DVD/Blu-ray posters included ratings and comments from critics, in this case a 5 star rating has been given by 'The Mail On Sunday'.
The leading star or the directors name is also featured, depending on there success or fame. DVD's and Blu-Ray's released in the UK are given an age rating by the 'BBFC' (British Board Film Classification)

The Side Cover: This is the side cover for the 2012 film 'The Dark Knight Rises'. The disc format logo is shown on the top left. The title of the film has been added in vertically to fit in, so the costumer can see the title from the side, this is so retailers has the capacity to fit in my copy's. Below the title the 'BBFC' logo is shown again, so the costumer knows the age rating before buying the DVD or Blu-Ray. The distributer, in this case 'Warner Bros.' is also included in the side cover.

The Back Cover/Blurb: This is the back cover for the 2012 film. 'Django Unchained' The blurb is written on the top. A blurb is usually a piece of text under one hundred words that gives an synopsis about the film. The cast and director are highlighted in a bold font, so that it caches the costumers eyes.  Special features are sometimes included such as making of documentary's and deleted scenes. The studio logos are featured below the cast and crew credits. The 'BBFC' rating appears again onscreen with the content described in the text box. The irish film censors office rating is shown next to the BBFC rating. At the bottom right hand of the sleeve is the retail bar-code.

Poster Evaluation

For my creative media project I have created a film poster. This is a step-by-step evaluation about how and why I made it.

Step 1: My first step was to take a photograph. Instead having a green screen background, I wanted to have a window reflection and a white background. I wanted a white background so that the audience eyes would direct to the centre of the poster. And the window reflection was a clue to the films story.

Step 2: My second step was to brighten the background so the reflection was less vivid. I did this by using the colour range tool. I also uploaded my title. I used a website called Dafont.com to create the scary font I wanted. I uploaded the text on to photoshop.

Step 3: My third step was adding the information. I had uploaded the BBFC certificate onto my film. I downloaded the image off the internet and uploaded onto a new layer in photoshop. I also uploaded a film distributor onto my poster, I downloaded the image off the internet and then uploaded it onto photoshop. The next thing I did was downloading the poster blurb from SkyDrive. I edited the text and uploaded it onto a new layer on photoshop. All this information helped create a more realistic feel to the poster.

Step 4: This is the completed version of my poster. I have made a few changes to my finished product, such as changing the tagline from top-left to centre and changing the colour white to make it stand out more. I have also enlarged the title and retitled it 'Confessions of a psychopath.'

ASA:The Advertising Standards Authority is the UK’s independent regulator of advertising across all media. These are guidelines I have chosen which will be needed to take into consideration when I'm making my poster.
- The subject of my film may be insensitive towards some viewers, I will need to make sure my poster  does not contain any offensive material.

- I will need to make sure that my poster shows that the film is a work of fiction and not a documentary or a reality show.

Film fonts

Subject: Horror font.

This font reminds me of the old 60s-70s french "Grindhouse" horror films, The shadow has a splatter effect, this suggests the bloody content of the film. The bold text looks rough and rugged, this create the feeling that something isn't right. Examples of this would be the "Saw" franchise and Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof".

Subject: Romance font.

In my opinion this font is target for gothic teenage girls. The italic font represents goth culture. And curled lettering suggests comfort and affection. The nature of a film with this font would suggest a dark romance aimed at teenage girls. Films with this theme are Twilight and Beautiful Creatures.

Subject: Action Film.

This font is targeted for mostly male audiences. The bold and stencilled text suggests a military theme. This font would be used on a more violent action flick such as the "Expendables".

Subject: Science Fiction.
This font is aimed to be futuristic. This can font can be targeted to all audiences because it integrates the theme of mystery in a unknown world. Films that use a similar font included Ridley scott's "Alien and stanley Kubricks "2001 space oddessey"

Photoshop: CD Case

Today we used Photoshop to create our own CD case, we used several elements and tools of the software to create the image.

Our first task was to crop the image of the CD and removed the surrounding image. We achieved this by using the elliptical marquee tool. We then moved onto the background. We uploaded an image onto the background layer. Our third objective was to create a third layer and uploaded an image of a French Horn. We then used the colour balance tool to change and blend in the original colours on the images.

Our next task was to alter the background. We managed this by using the distort wave tool. This made the image more interesting and made it stand out. We also lowered the opacity on the images to make them seem less dominant.

Our next objective was to use the text tool. I used the colour tool and used the inner shadow tool to create the mixer of colour  in the writing.

After all this objectives were completed I got the final result of my CD case.
